| I decided to hike to the top of Hippo Butte, located not too far from the campground, because it looked like it offered good views of the Monument. Once again, this involved extensive overland hiking, but fortunately, the cheat grass wasn't as bad here. On the flank of Hippo Butte, I saw this dragonfly resting on a twig. |

While climbing the butte, I began to hear the screaming call of a hawk overhead. This hawk kept up its call the entire time I was on the Butte. I took care not to go near its nest, which I never saw.
| Hippo Butte lived up to its promise of a spectacular view of the Monument. The panorama at the top of this page was taken from this butte (click on it to see it larger and without the title). This photo shows the lava plug on Hippo Butte with Schonchin Butte in the background. |

We saw a lot of squirrels resting in dead trees at Lava Beds. I have no idea why they would sit so exposed. One tree had three of them in it, next to the road.
| Unfortunately, we began to see a lot of roadkill on the weekends. Turkey vultures were quick to claim the remains. |

I observed so many wildlfowers during this visit that I decided to put them on their own page, which you can visit here.
